The Austin Chapter’s Annual Open House took place on September 19. It was very nice to see a lot of new and familiar faces. We made the event more interactive this year by encouraging attendees to visit each table to learn about the functions of each Chapter program. Upon each visit they got a sticker on their bingo card. Once completed, they were entered into a random drawing to win some door prizes. We awarded prizes to four attendees at the end of the evening.

Our Chapter leadership was excited to share the many ways in which your Chapter serves you and all the various ways to get plugged in. As this year’s membership chair, I’m very proud of the efforts our Chapter is making to keep members interested. I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to encourage more members to take advantage of their membership by actively engaging them in activities and interacting with them frequently via events.

We had a lot of great conversations with attendees ranging from small talk to big career decisions, as well as challenges preventing them from achieving their goals. As I sat next to Bryan Morgan this year’s Chapter Treasurer) at the membership table, I overheard an attendee ask Bryan this question “What do I need to do to get involved in the Chapter?” And Bryan’s response was “just show up”, I couldn’t have said a better answer myself since that’s exactly how my involvement began. Show up, and you will see an area that you can make a difference in or even develop skills that eventually become strengths. We always welcome new and fresh ideas from members; after all, what is a Chapter without its members?

As always, I’m very thankful to the TXCPA staff here at the Austin Chapter (Diane, Kaira, Lucy, and Linda). They see the vision and bring all our ideas to life with setup, informational materials, and of course refreshments. Team work really does make the dream work!
