Despite the challenges we have all had to face with this “new normal” in many ways, TXCPA Austin has been able to carry on with “Business as Usual.” Case in point has been our outreach to our student members. Prior to schools moving to 100% online in the face of COVID, the Chapter had several on-campus events planned at various schools throughout March and April. Not wanting our future CPA leaders to feel left out at this time, several members stepped up to help facilitate virtual events for our student membership!
Our first event was a virtual career panel organized by Professor Jacquelin Childress of Austin Community College. TXCPA Austin Members Lisa Sretenovic, Nick Ballard and I spoke to students about life as a CPA in today’s environment, career routes in accounting, best (and worst!) parts about being a CPA (everyone always seems to think we can do their taxes…) and more! The panel was very well-received, and our volunteers greatly enjoyed the experience.
Following the success of the career panel, I worked with ACC Professors (and TXCPA Members) Tracie Miller-Nobles and Larry Stephens to put on a virtual Professional Social Media Workshop for Austin area Student and Candidate Members. The 90-minute workshop walked students though key areas of LinkedIn and how they could make the most of the platform to help them network, look for jobs and grow their professional brand. Over 30 students from multiple schools in the area including ACC and Texas State participated in the event which was recorded for those who were unable to attend. Questions from students were so numerous that the event actually went into overtime! As one of our student members summed it up: “The workshop was so helpful! I was able to follow along in real time and make updates to my profile as we went through each topic. Thank you so much for putting this together!”.
The world might have slowed down but it continues to turn and your TXCPA Austin Chapter will continue to do all it can to serve our members.
