On December 5, 2020, TXCA Austin partnered with Austin Community College to provide the first ever virtual Meet the Firms event for ACC accounting students. The event started with a panel of Austin Chapter volunteers representing several local employers: Sarah Burgess-Finley, DK Partners; Connie Clark, Faske Lay & Co; Jessica Diaz, Atchley and Associates; Jason Lucio, entrepreneur and former ACC student; and Bryan Morgan, PWC. The panelists shared their opinions and recent experiences with the participants about the methods used for networking and job search skills that were used in the past as well as skills currently being used and skills that potential employees should utilize in the future based on the workforce changes that we have experienced during 2020; as well as the impact this has had on new CPA candidates looking to enter the accounting profession.

After the panel discussion, the participating students were invited to attend breakout rooms where they could talk to local employers and get more information on possible employment and internship opportunities for 2021. Austin Chapter members again stepped up to the plate as we had 9 local firms participate in the event: Figer & Company, CPAs; Pope, Shamsie & Dooley, LLP; Insogna CPA; Heyman & Associates, PLLC; Mueller & Associates, CPAs; Pendas International, PLLC; Texas Association of School Business Officials; Long View Equity, LLC; and Novogradac & Company.  UWorld Rogers CPA Review also participated and provided students with information on upcoming changes to the CPA exam.

Overall, this was a very exciting virtual event with over 30 students attending and we invite other TXCPA Austin members and local accounting firms to participate in our 2021 event. This is a great opportunity for professional firms looking for interns or new employees, most with previous work experiences, for entry level staff positions that will provide these students with the experience required for CPA licensing in the state of Texas.
