On Thursday, February 13, Tracie Miller-Nobles taught a wonderful Data Analytics class including a hands-on Power BI software session as part of the chapter’s ongoing Business and Industry continuing education program. This was so convenient and comfortable – the class was casual, held over lunchtime, and we were spread out in the Chapter Training room with power for all our laptops, drinks, snacks, and some of us even brought a bag lunch.
Tracie began by explaining what Big Data is versus what Data Analytics is, and how employers approaching ACC to recruit students are asking for Data Analytics skills. She showed us a number of real-world applications of Data Analytics to help us visualize how we could use it to enhance our own accounting productivity, reporting effectiveness, and analytic insights.
Unlike other lecture-oriented classes, after this introduction we had an opportunity to download Microsoft’s free desktop for Power BI, install it on our own computers, and work some of ACC’s class exercises in creating interactive analytic dashboards. Your very own B&I Spy had never used this software before, but I had it up, running, and a decent idea of what I can do with it and how to do it in just this short two-hour class! I told Tracie that if she does an intermediate class, count me in!
If you are not attending the Business and Industry continuing education classes, you’re missing out! Join us next time we have a CPE opportunity – you’ll learn something relevant to your actual work, and you can get to know some of our terrific group!
